SF Works has a successful track record of creating new programs
in collaboration with community partners and local employers
that enable people to advance in their careers and be more financially
secure. Two of our current programs under development are:
Growing
Green Jobs
SF
Works completed in early 2010 a survey of local green employers
to
identify what are their growth expectations, hiring needs and
business
challenges. We learned that the energy efficiency and remodeling
sectors anticipate significant growth, in part fueled by publicly
funded
demand, and that these businesses tend to be small and less
connected to
business services. SF Works is now identifying, in collaboration
with
others, programs that can assist in creating quality jobs in
this
sector.

Using Hiring Tax Credits to Stimulate Local Businesses and Jobs
SF Works is taking its on-the-ground experience helping local employers access hiring tax credits as an opportunity to better understand how this important economic development program can better achieve its dual purpose of attracting and retaining businesses and creating an incentive of hiring people with barriers to employment. We are now piloting several initiatives that demonstrate how to better connect tax credits to job creation and placement.

Increasing
Access to Services and Support
In
2009, SF Works piloted our initiative to connect lower-wage
workers
to income supports and community resources through their workplace.
We
assisted hundreds of clients in collaboration with more than
20
employers. We learned that less than 10% of our clients were
accessing
any community services even though they had fragile economic
situations,
were eligible and entitled to assistance, and were interes in
available
services. In 2010, SF Works is playing a leadership role in
a coalition to bring
together other local organizations involved in similar efforts
to increase
access to services and supports through advocacy, technology
and marketing.
We are also doing deeper research with our clients and collaborating
with
employers to determine how to scale our work.
